Should My Child See A Therapist?

Sometimes life is difficult to process and the stress of it can overwhelm the most resilient person.

Adolescents and children may need help dealing with overwhelming stress from school or relationships, peer pressure or family issues, such as divorce, death of a loved one, relocation or other transition.

There are many reasons a child or adolescent may benefit from counseling. Sometimes the “normal” pressures of life can become overwhelming, but young people also experience “abnormal stress” as a result of some type of trauma. Often they may not be able to articulate what is bothering them and family members, friends, and teachers begin to observe behavior that may indicate struggles with emotional issues. When young people need help with those struggles a therapist can help them get back on development track.

Some signs that your child might benefit from counseling:

  • Acting out
  • Excessive/uncontrollable anger
  • A significant drop in grades
  • Episodes of sadness, tearfulness, or depression
  • Episodes of irritability
  • Social withdrawal or isolation
  • Decreased interest in previously enjoyed activities (without replacement by new interests)
  • Overly aggressive behavior
  • Sudden changes in appetite (binging, or restricting)
  • Insomnia or increased sleepiness
  • School refusal or avoidance
  • Mood swings
  • Physical complaints, such as headaches, or stomachache, shakiness or racing heart despite a normal physical exam by your doctor.
  • Signs of alcohol, drug or other substance use or abuse
  • Complex grief/bereavement
